Children from Heronswood Primary School had the opportunity to meet local business men and woman as part of their careers day at school on Monday 5th October.

Over 150 children took part in this event to help raise awareness of the different types of jobs that are on offer and to help them aspire to their own chosen career as they move through primary school and into secondary education.

The children were delighted to have the opportunity to interview a guitar manufacturer, an engineer, a BBC reporter, a police sergeant, a group travel organiser, a British Airways flight attendant, a teacher, a careers advisor and a retail consultant.

Each adult talked to groups of children for 5 minutes explain how they decided upon their chosen careers, explaining what education and qualifications they needed and explaining what they have to do on a day to basis as part of their job.  The children, who were aged from 7 to 11 then had the opportunity to ask lots of questions to find out more information.

As follow up work the children have all produced information leaflets, posters and job adverts to show what they now understand about the different careers they were introduced to during their careers day.

Preston Crisp, aged 7 said, “I want to be a police officer when I grow up so I really enjoyed talking to the police officer about his job.  I tried on his helmet and utility belt and both were really heavy.”

Giorgio Malara, aged 9 said, “I really enjoyed the careers day because we learnt lots about different careers, it has inspired me to be a journalist because I like finding out about news and reporting it.”

Mrs Pierpoint, Head of School said, “It is so important that we expose our children to the wide variety of careers that are out there for them to pursue from a young age.  We want to inspire them and show them that their learning in school today helps to shape their future.”
