The Year 5 and 6 children at Heronswood Primary School demonstrated their modern foreign language skills by organising and running a French cafe.  This was part of a cross curricular topic which the whole school benefitted from.

The Year 5 and Year 6 children from Heronswood Primary hosted a French Cafe for all the children and parents to celebrate Bastille Day in France. This is the day the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille and the end of the monarchy.

Children from across upper key stage two had researched and made leaflets about the history of Bastille Day as part of their modern foreign languages curriculum.  The information was available on the tables for visitors to the cafe to read, along with a general knowledge quiz about France.  The children also designed their own French menus and decorated the cafe with French themed art work.

Every child in school was able to sample a selection of French cuisine and drinks at the cafe whilst practicing their French language skills.  The Year 5 and Year 6 children sang songs in French to entertain the visitors and in the afternoon many parents from came to visit the cafe too.  An enjoyable day was had by all!

The parents and children all enjoyed the French experience and were entertained by their children singing the menu to them, then serving delicious French food.

Mrs Summers, the lead for MFL at Heronswood said, “The French day was an amazing opportunity for our children to put their French language skills into a real life situation.  The café was a huge success and we were really pleased with the number of parents who came along to support the event.
