At Heronswood Primary School our Reception children and staff are currently embarking on a mammoth task as they turn their concrete jungle into a multisensory haven, full of opportunities for learning.

Since September our Early Years unit has been involved in numerous changes and developments as the staff have worked tirelessly to overhaul the provision for our youngest children in the school.  Walls have been knocked down, learning zones have been created and the new open plan layout has revolutionised our children’s learning environment.  The whole ethos of a Reception classroom is to allow children to choose and lead their own learning in a safe and well organised environment; where they can take risks and furrow the direction of their thinking.  The children are encouraged to initiate their own learning from the inspirational environment that is set up around them.

The next step on our journey is to create a brand new Outdoor Learning Environment where the children can continue to learn, explore and comprehend the world around them.  The current provision is tired and dated and is limited in its learning opportunities.

Our Reception children have been busy planning and designing what a good learning environment should look like.  They have written letters to their Headteacher, Mr Ascroft asking if they can have a new play house and they have also written letters to local business’ to request resources such as compost, bark, slate, decking boards and plants.

In addition, two children also visited a couple of local shops including Homebase and JTF Mega Discount Warehouse. Rob King, the Assistant Manager from JTF, took the children on a tour of the shop showing them where to find vegetable seeds, flower seeds, compost and stones.  Rob was extremely helpful and very informative and the children thoroughly enjoyed their tour!

Mrs Pierpoint, Deputy Head Teacher stated, “Our Reception children are so excited about developing their outdoor learning environment.  This is the final element to make our Early Years provision outstanding.    Our children always amaze me and the two children we took to JTF spoke confidently to Rob about what they were hoping to do in their outdoor space.  Their enthusiasm is totally contagious.  We would just like to say a huge thank you to Rob and his staff for all their help today.”

If anybody would like to make any donations of resources then please speak to our school office on 01562 69750.
