 Welcome to Y1 LCJ

Hello and welcome to our Year 1 LJ class page!

Our class teacher is Miss Jenkins and our teaching assistants are Mrs Southwick and Mrs Heawood. Ms Fleming will teach the class on a Monday afternoon.

In our class the rules and expectations are built around the core values of our school.

  • Sharing
  • Trust
  • Achievement
  • Respect
  • Safety

English Information

Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries. It is a whole school expectation that children read at least five times per week; please also remember to sign diaries once children have read. We teach reading through Phonics lessons every day and guided reading sessions where we focus on developing comprehension skills.

Maths Information

The focus of mathematics teaching in Year 1 is to ensure that children become increasingly fluent with whole numbers – working numbers between 0 to 20, and being able to count forwards and backwards to 100. Also including recalling number facts to 10 and the concept of place value. This should ensure that children develop efficient visual representation of what numbers look like and what is there value. Children should also develop their ability to solve a range of problems and develop mathematical reasoning. By the end of year 1, pupils should begin to be fluent counting in groups of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and be able to use these in a variety of situations.

PE and Kit Information

Our PE day is a Thursday

It is really important that the children have a suitable PE kit in school on our PE days so that they can participate fully in the activities.

The PE kit is as follows:

Navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper and trainers.  (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer)

All items of the PE kit should be clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag with the child’s name on the outside.

Forest School kit.

It is really important that children have suitable clothing for Forest School, so that they can participate safely in our outdoor area. Remember in Forest School children may become muddy.

Outdoor trousers, suitable outdoor shirt, socks, wellies and appropriate outdoor coats.

Spellings are sent home on a weekly basis and the test will be on a Friday each week. Homework alternates between a CGP Phonics book, CGP Maths book or an activity on Seesaw. Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult.  It is really important that with all homework the children are encouraged to complete it independently but then supported when necessary.

Topic Information for the Term

You will find links to the topic web for each term in 'The Curriculum' subsection in 'About Us'. The topic web will allow you to see what your child is covering across the curriculum during this academic year.
