Once again, I am amazed and awed by the way in which staff have adapted so quickly and professionally to the new situation we find ourselves in this term. As always, supporting our pupils safely, both academically and emotionally, remains our priority.

Heronswood Scientists took part in the Rivers, Ice, Ice Baby afternoon and enjoyed working scientifically on an icy November day.

  This week, the government announced amendments to the Year 6 SATs for May 2021 and stated that, until April 2021, Ofsted monitoring visits will take place for category schools only.

  This week, we are celebrating the well-earned success of two of our staff leaders who have been awarded a National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL).

  This week has been anti-bullying week. On Monday, pupils wore odd socks to school as a fun way of encouraging them to express and celebrate their individuality.

  This week, we have spent time thinking of others. On Wednesday, our schools joined the nation in a two-minute silence at 11.00am on Armistice Day.

  I’d like to start by welcoming everyone back to school - I hope that you all had a good half-term break and managed to spend some relaxing time with your families.

Governance I cannot overstate the importance of good governance and the positive difference that our trustees and school improvement board members make to our trust.   I have some exciting news to share with you this week! I am delighted to report that our application to open a brand-new, purpose-built, alternative provision primary school has been successful. This much-needed provision will open in the Wyre Forest area of Worcestershire in September 2022.

  This week, one of our schools welcomed back its bubble of pupils and staff at the end of the self-isolation period.

  We are already at the end of our third week of term! I am delighted to be able to report that attendance remains high across the trust.

  It was wonderful to see the happy, smiling faces of pupils and staff as we welcomed all year groups back to our schools last week.

Our after school clubs for Autumn will be open for payment at 4pm on Tuesday 8th September.

From September we will be using the MarvellousMe app which is a fabulous way for parents to interact with everyday school life.

Welcome back Reception and Year 1

What an exciting week this has been for our Rivers family! On Monday, schools across the trust welcomed back pre-school and nursery children.

  On Monday, we will be welcoming back our nursery and pre-school children followed by our Reception and Year 1 children from 8th June and our Year 6 children from 15th June.

Kindness This week is ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’ and it couldn’t be more timely.

Moving forward I’m sure that, like me, you were all listening to the prime minister’s speech on Sunday evening as he set out the government’s plans to ease the lockdown over the coming weeks and months.

During this time, when we can’t see our friends or hug our relatives, keeping in touch has never felt more important. Even that phrase sounds strange in these strange times when ‘touch’ is exactly what we can’t do any more.

We loved looking at all the fabulous creations for our virtual Easter bonnet parade, huge well done to everyone who took part!

Dear Parents and Carers of Heronswood, Following the government’s announcement tonight that schools will be closed to the majority of pupils from this Friday afternoon, we are writing to reassure you that we are making arrangements to address this new situation.  

Prior to World Book Day our Early Years children and our KS1 children at Heronswood Primary School had a special visit from Natalie Pritchard a children’s author.

Some furry friends called in for a fun afternoon with the Year One children at Heronswood Primary School earlier this week, to help support learning about animals and the environments they live in.

Wyre Forest District Council and Heronswood Primary School pupils have worked together to solve a very messy problem!

WHP are offering some constructive new courses to parents during the Summer term.

On Monday 18th November a group of children from Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School, on Spennells in Kidderminster took part in a litter pick with the Pick Up Artists – a litter picking organisation based in Kidderminster and the surrounding areas.

Heronswood Primary School pupils took a stand against bullying last week to celebrate Anti-Bullying Week 2019.

West Mercia Police made a visit to Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School to help prepare and educate the children on staying safe during the celebrations this half term.

On Thursday 6th June, Year 4 had an extremely exciting afternoon. They have been learning about the effects of pressure build up and investigated this through a rocket launch.

Heronswood pupils have had a fantastic experience from I2C Tennis coaching. Children took part in a range of Tennis related activities throughout the course of the day.

The Year One classes at Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School in Spennells were visited by a few troublesome dragons earlier this week, who played havoc with the classroom set up and chased teachers down the corridor!

On Wednesday 30th January all classes from Year 1 to 6 were involved in Code Day. The children were given the opportunity to spend an hour accessing Coding activities using a variety of websites.

Pupils at Heronswood Primary have been learning all about how to be model pedestrians, when they are out and about in Spennells.

On Wednesday 12th September, Year Six visited King Charles 1 School to enjoy their first transition visit of the year.  Des and Judith from the Historical Services to Schools led this fantastic day.

Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra’s WW1 Armistice Centenary Commemoration Project

During the last week of the summer term, 80 plus children from across Year 5 and Year 6 performed a fabulous musical called, Shakespeare Rocks. 

  During the summer term, children from across the whole school, including Pre-School participated in a competitive sports day organised by Mr Partridge, our Year 3 teacher.

Over 700 pupils from the Rivers CofE Multi Academy Trust family of schools came together on the Thursday 12th July for the third annual Festival of Music.  

This year our children, parents, friends and families enjoyed a fun packed Summer Fair which was held on the school playground and field.  We were delighted to be able to welcome Pampered Ponies, who provided pony rides for the whole afternoon. 

This week at Heronswood Primary School, celebrations were running high for the 43 children who managed to achieve 100% attendance for the whole school year. The children, who were from Reception up to Year 6, joined Mrs Pierpoint and Miss Whelan for afternoon tea in the school hall.

On the evening of Tuesday 26th June, Heronswood Primary School Hall was once again transformed into a TV studio where children were given the opportunity to perform in the annual and much revered, ‘HERONSWOOD HAS TALENT!’ show. 

The Head Teacher, Mrs Pierpoint along with Peter Dyke and Marcus Hart, officially opened the brand new, state-of-the-art building at Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School, on the Spennells estate last week.

The new classrooms are nearing completion and the final touches are being added.

The four new classrooms at Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School are progressing well and are still on track to be completed in May 2018.  The children are really looking forward to moving into their new rooms.

On Tuesday 30th January, Year 5 children from across Rivers Academy joined together for a spy/detective inspired Writing Workshop aptly named ‘Cloak and Dagger’. Year 5 children from Great Witley, Northwick, Cranham and St Clements joined with Heronswood to spend the morning discussing ideas, creating characters and then writing and editing their own work.

On Thursday 30th November, four children from 6BK were invited to Worcester Royal Grammar School in order to take part in a morning of maths challenges. Fatima, Charlie, Alex and Toby were excited at the prospect of competing against other schools in the Rivers Academy and another Worcester City Primary School.

Just after the October half term holiday major building work and renovations started at Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School where the plan is to build four brand new classrooms.  These new classrooms will be used by our Year 1 and Year 2 children which will enable the old mobiles to be removed from the playground.

Heronswood Primary School pupils supported Anti-Bullying Week by celebrating what makes them different, coinciding with the theme ‘All Different, All Equal’. They had a week full of events which included teaching the children to identify the different types of bullying, how bullying affects different people and where to go to seek help.

On Friday 10th of November, as part of our school careers day, Heronswood pupils were visited by people from a number of different professions. All pupil’s greatly enjoyed the experience and were able to discuss what life is like after school.

The children from Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School enjoyed a frightening experience as they participated in this year’s Halloween Disco, which was held in the school hall.  In total about 150 children came along to join in with the fun and festivities.

We are hoping to take our choir to the NEC, Genting Arena again this year to take part in the Young Voices concert in January 2018 which sees almost  10,000 children coming together to sing the same songs. 

Parents, Children and Staff at Heronswood are celebrating after being awarded the very well-deserved overall ‘GOOD’ judgement from OFSTED. In particular the school are exceptionally proud of being awarded OUTSTANDING in two areas.

This week, a specially selected group of Year 5 children from Heronswood have all passed their Jumping Jaxx Play Leader training. The children greatly enjoyed the event, learning new games and creating new ways to play sports.

On Wednesday 27th September Year Six visited King Charles 1 School to enjoy their first transition visit of the year. Des and Judith from the Historical Services to Schools led this fantastic day.

On Monday 25th September, Parents and Carers at Heronswood Primary School were invited to attend a Reading Workshop. Reading is given high priority at Heronswood.

On Tuesday 12th September, Year 1 and Year 2 children at Heronswood Primary School immersed themselves in a day of activities relating to their new topic – Meet the Medievals.

On Wednesday 19th July, at King Charles – Oldfield Hall, Heronswood Primary School Year Six performed their own interpretation of ‘Shrek’ a modern fairy-tale.

On the evening of Tuesday 13th June 2107, Heronswood Primary School Hall was transformed into a live studio where children were given the opportunity to perform in, ‘HERONSWOOD HAS TALENT’. 

Over 450 pupils from the Rivers CofE Multi Academy Trust family of schools came together on the Thursday 13th July for the second annual Festival of Music.  

On Tuesday 27th June, Rivers CE Academy held an RE day at Great Witley Church. Two children from each of the Rivers schools came along to join in with the activities. 

Five pupils from Heronswood Primary School travelled to the Royal Grammar School in Worcester, for a day of art in a workshop called ‘Down by the River’.

On Thursday 8th June, children at Heronswood Primary School immersed themselves in a day of valuable and interesting activities relating to exercise and the human body, as part of their second Healthy Living Day.

On Monday 22rd May 2017, Anna, from the NSPCC (National Society of Provision of Cruelty to Children) visited Heronswood Primary School to lead a Parent workshop based on online safety.

Children at Heronswood Primary modelled their inspired creations for a special parade held at the school during the first week back after the holidays.

Following our very successful Earth Hour and popular Healthy Living day at Heronswood Primary School we developed A BIG AMBITION! EVERY CHILD THAT COULD, WALKED TO SCHOOL.

On Tuesday 23rd May 2017, Anna, from the NSPCC (National Society of Provision of Cruelty to Children) visited Heronswood Primary School to lead an assembly for Key Stage 2 children in Year 3 to Year 6.

Year 1 and Year 2 children from Heronswood Primary School children were transported back in time, to 1666 by a professional theatre company.

On Thursday 6th April, children at Heronswood Primary School immersed themselves in a day of valuable and interesting activities, in order to promote their Healthy Living Day. 

Children in Years 3 and 4 at Heronswood Primary School ended the term on a high with their amazing performance of Pirates Vs Mermaids!  

Last week all the children from Heronswood Primary School celebrated World Book Day in style.  Every single child, across the whole school abandoned school uniform in favour of a book character costume instead. 

Children in Year 3 and Year 4 at Heronswood Primary took ‘A step back in time’ to the Stone Age when they visited Bishops Wood just before February half term.

This term started with a bang for our Year 5 and Year 6 children as they were escorted back in time to the Victorian Days.

Smiles were wide and bodies were bouncing excitedly when a class of Year One pupils from Heronswood Primary School recently took part in a Multi-skills festival at King Charles High School.

At Heronswood Primary School, on Tuesday 10th January 2017, our Reception parents came for a stay and play session with their children to learn how we teach phonics.

Children at Heronswood Primary School have been participating in and enjoying extra French lessons during the Autumn Term.

Children from Heronswood Primary School abandoned their school uniform this week and instead wore blue clothing to help raise awareness of the National Anti-Bullying Week (14TH- 19TH November).

A group of children from Years four, five and six at Heronswood have been hard at work designing and creating an art piece based on Mutual Respect.

This term pupils at Heronswood Primary School have been going poetry mad!  Before half term, children across the whole school were invited to join in with a poetry competition.

During the week beginning Monday 16th of October, Heronswood Primary School held their annual ‘Arts Week’.  The focus this year was on learning new skills and developing previous knowledge and understanding.   Of course, there was lots of mess and fun thrown in too!

During the planning stages of this day, teachers at Heronswood knew the laws of physics, logic and the predictable would give way to magic and invention at the hands of their pupils.

This week at Heronswood Primary School, celebrations were running high for the 24 children who managed to achieve 100% attendance for the whole school year. The children, who were from Year 1 up to Year 6, joined Mrs Pierpoint for afternoon tea in the school hall.

On Wednesday 20th July, Year Five and Six pupils at Heronswood delivered a brilliantly stunning performance of one of the most popular Disney animated musicals, The Lion King. Year Six actors presented the story of a lion cub's journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny.

On Wednesday 13th July, children from across the whole school, including Pre-School participated in a competitive sports day organised by Mr Logan, our Year 3 teacher.

Year Six pupils from Heronswood Primary School in Kidderminster have been crowned winners of this year’s Young Citizens Challenge 2016, for the Wyre Forest area.

On Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd July the amazing Year Six pupils at Heronswood said a fond farewell to their school friends during their leaving assembly and passing out parade.   It was a celebration of the children’s time at school, sharing memories with both staff and pupils.

Children at Heronswood Primary School attended a ‘Great British Tea Party’ in the glorious sunshine to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

On Friday 1st July we took almost 120 children from Heronswood Primary School to Croome Court, near Worcester, where we performed alongside the other 3 schools in our Rivers Academy Trust; Great Witley, St Clements and Cutnall Green.

On the evening of Wednesday 8th June, Heronswood Primary School Hall was transformed into a TV studio where children were given the opportunity to perform in their first, ‘HERONSWOOD HAS TALENT’ show. 

Year 3 and Year 4 children from Heronswood Primary School took part in a tailor made Myths and Legends workshop on a recent trip to a Birmingham Art Gallery. The visit was an exciting end to their ‘Mythical Mayhem’ topic.

The Year 6 children from Heronswood Primary School were invited to the Houses of Parliament last week to enjoy a tour of the historic building and find out more about the process of democracy in Britain.

The parents of Heronswood Pre-School recently had the opportunity to enjoy two ‘Stay and Play’ sessions with their children.  Parents were invited in so that they could see the different types of learning activities that their children participate in on a daily basis. 

The Year 1 and Year 2 children from Heronswood Primary School joined their local Kidderminster Tesco Superstore for a fantastic ‘Farm to Fork Trail’ experience.

On Thursday 3rd March 2016, children and staff from across Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School celebrated the annual, much anticipated ‘World Book Day’.

This week our youngest children in Pre-School participated in their very first gymnastics lesson using the big apparatus in the school hall.

This year is the first year that our Year Two children at Heronswood Primary will sit the brand new SAT’s tests which are linked directly to the National Curriculum. In September 2014 the government introduced a new and updated national curriculum framework which your children started when they were in Year One.

The children at Heronswood Primary school enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch during their last week in school. 

Just before the children from Heronswood Primary School broke up for their Christmas holidays, they held an amazing Christingle Concert at St Georges Church in Kidderminster.

The sun shone brightly on the children at Heronswood Primary School as they celebrated Harvest with their parents, families and friends.

During our October half term the children from Heronswood Primary School were set a very unusual challenge.  For the first time ever, the children from Reception up to Year 6 were asked to participate in a Scarecrow making competition.

Just before our half term holiday, the children from all three schools in our Rivers Academy Trust, participated in an arts week which focused on art from around the world.  The children looked at Africa, Australia, France, India and Belgium along with Rainforests and Oceans.   

The new Head of School, Mrs Pierpoint and Mark Garnier, the local Member of Parliament for Wyre Forest, officially opened the brand new, state-of-the-art building at Heronswood Primary School, on the Spennells estate this week.

Year 3 and 4 children at Heronswood Primary School brought their curriculum to life through a drama workshop designed by Freshwater Theatre Company. The professional theatre company hooked the children into their new topic, ‘Wonder At The World’ through a range of interactive drama activities in a ‘Let’s Locate – Continents’ workshop.

The Heronswood Dance Club sparkled, dazzled and amazed their families and friends recently with a jaw dropping performance at Baxter College.

Ghosts and ghouls were wondering through Spennells Valley Nature Reserve when the whole of Heronswood Primary School went on a sponsored walk in their fancy dress costumes.  Heronswood Primary School Council wanted to find a unique way to raise money for school funds and decided that they would do this by utilising the local area, whilst keeping fit at the same time!

The children from Heronswood Primary School enjoyed a frightening experience as they participated in this year’s Halloween Party, which was held on the school field and in our Forest School area.  In total about 80 children came along to join in with the fun.

Children from Heronswood Primary School were delighted to meet two very special visitors, who had travelled all the way from Kyelini, a rural part of Kenya, 30 miles from Nairobi.

Children from Heronswood Primary School had the opportunity to meet local business men and woman as part of their careers day at school on Monday 5th October. 

Children from three Worcestershire Schools benefited from a Tour of the Houses of Parliament and mini Tour of London last Thursday 24th September 2015. 

Year 3 and 4 children at Heronswood Primary School brought their curriculum to life through a drama workshop designed by Freshwater Theatre Company.

The Year 5 and 6 children at Heronswood Primary School demonstrated their modern foreign language skills by organising and running a French cafe.  This was part of a cross curricular topic which the whole school benefitted from.

On the 2nd of June Miss Shaw’s class had the pleasure of meeting Prince Benjamin of Heronswood Forest when he came to deliver a royal invitation inviting all the children to the King and Queen’s ball, which was to be held on Friday 5th June.

On Saturday morning, the amazing choir from Heronswood Primary enthralled shoppers in Kidderminster Town Centre with their beautiful singing.  The children were in fine voice and performed all of the songs which feature on their very own compilation CD; 14 songs altogether.

Children at Heronswood Primary School got on their bikes yesterday to create their very own fruit smoothies, blended by the energy they created.

On Monday 23rd March 2015, the key stage 1 children at Heronswood Primary School, Kidderminster held a great museum.

The children at Heronswood Primary school thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the solar eclipse on Friday 20th March.

Forty of our Year 6 children and 6 staff have just returned from a week’s residential at Abernant Lake Hotel activity centre. 

On Wednesday 11th March, children in Year 3 and 4 at Heronswood Primary School, had a space-tacular experience with Chris from the Thinktank outreach service, Birmingham.

The children at Heronswood Primary had a fabulous, fun day on Friday 13th April to help raise money for Comic Relief. 

On Friday the 6th of March all the children, from Year 1 up to Year 6 gathered in the hall to be part of making a whole school CD, this was a special and rare occasion.  At the front of the hall there was a man; Matt who was from ‘School Recording Stars .’

Children in Years 5 and 6 at Heronswood Primary School have embarked on a spy based topic and for the past 4 weeks have been living double lives; Heronswood Pupils and Special Agents!

On Friday we went on a ‘Listening Walk’ all around the playground, the field and forest school area. When we were in forest school we could not believe our eyes… we found two dinosaur eggs.

The oldest children at Heronswood are currently working on a topic all about spies.  The children are thoroughly enjoying the topic, but the teachers decided to raise the bar last week. 

All of the children at Heronswood have been taking part in an exciting school art project this week, from our youngest children in Reception to our oldest in Year 6.

This week the DJ, Dicky Dodd from Signal 107 radio station came to visit Heronswood Primary School to interview 10 of our children because we have been nominated as school of the week by one of our families.

  Our Year 6 children have just returned from an amazing visit to London, where they took in a whistle stop tour of all the main sites.  We were very lucky with the weather and although it was cold, the sun shone all day.  The main focus of this visit was the pre-arranged visit to the Houses of Parliament, which was the final stop of the day.

Yesterday for the first time ever, we took the whole school to Redditch Palace Theatre to see the pantomime production of Cinderella, starring Anne Charleston as the Fairy Godmother. 

By candlelight tonight our singing club, made up of children from Year 2 up to Year 6, totally captivated our hearts as they performed their little hearts out in front of a huge crowd at St George’s Church in Kidderminster. 

This week it was the turn of our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 parents to became children again as they learnt about maths in the classrooms.  We wanted our parents to understand how maths is taught at Heronswood so that they are able to support their children with their learning. 

This year the children in Year 5 and Year 6 designed and made their own stalls.  They included pin the nose on Rudolph, the sock game, plate raffle, reindeer food and choco cards.  In addition, the Heronswood Helpers also ran a café, a bottle tombola, a chocolate tombola and a cake stall.

This afternoon our Year 1 and Year 2 parents became children again as they learnt about maths in the classrooms.  We wanted our parents to understand how maths is taught at Heronswood so that they are able to support their children with their learning.

      Just before half term we handed out our parent questionnaire survey at parents evening, to enable the views of our families to be heard.  We were delighted to receive 62 responses which have since been analysed and viewed on an individual basis.

Children in RLS had great fun visiting Spennells Valley to kick start their Journeys topic.

This year we are having a big focus on reading at Heronswood.  Reading is very important part of life and school life for all of our children.  

Heronswood Primary School has joined up with two other schools in the county to form the first Multi Academy Trust in Worcestershire.

As you may already be aware, the governing body of Heronswood Primary School has applied to become an academy under the Academies Act 2010.

We were delighted with the number of people who supported the school last Friday by attending the summer fair.  There was a happy and relaxed feel as people explored all the stalls that were on offer and with the sun shinning on us, we couldn’t have asked for any more.  It was lovely to see lots of our families, friends, relatives and local residents soaking up the carnival atmosphere.

On Thursday this week all of our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 children came to school in their PE kits ready for sports day.  We managed to complete all of the events and the races during the morning session and the weather was perfect not too hot and dry the whole time.

On Tuesday this week all of our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children put on their PE kits ready for their sports day.  The weather was very kind; not too hot and dry the whole time which enabled us to do all the events and races.

On the 19th of May our school office had a very special delivery. Two parcels were delivered to the Reception classrooms with a tag saying ‘Handle with Care’.

Every Wednesday after school, children from Years 4, 5 and 6 attend dance club with Miss Ralph in the hall.

Our Year 6 children have been busy creating and writing their own radio jingles to advertise our Summer Fair.  They have been working in groups of 4, 5 and 6 to create their master pieces.

On Wednesday; 21st May, class 6NR had a slavery experience morning. It was the most exciting day ever!!! Here is what happened…

Every Friday after school, the choir meet in the school hall to rehearse a whole range of songs. They have worked very hard since September to learn the melodies, lyrics and movements for our performance which is shared in front of a huge audience.  

The Spring term ended with a whole school celebration of the Year 3/4 Settlers and Invaders topic.  Over the course of the term we have developed our brand new forest school area and this provided the perfect venue for a living museum.  

On Monday 31st March 2014 Year 4 went on a residential trip to Condover Hall for 2 nights. On route we stopped at Wroxeter, which was the fourth largest city in Roman Britain. We explored the remains of the Bath house as well as viewing a replica of a Roman town house. We even tried on some Roman clothes. After a picnic lunch we continued on our journey down Watling Street!

The Year 5 and Year 6 children at Heronswood have been learning all about Natural Art over this last term.  The topic started with a special visit to The Wyre Forest and an amazing visit from an Ice Sculpture, who came into school.

At Heronswood Primary School our Reception children and staff are currently embarking on a mammoth task as they turn their concrete jungle into a multisensory haven, full of opportunities for learning. 

Children at Heronswood Primary School experienced an exotic day, on Wednesday 12th March when they were visited by The Animal Man (theanimalman.co.uk).  This amazing and stimulating opportunity was enjoyed by all the children in Key Stage 1 and the Reception classes. 

Last week all the children from Heronswood Primary School celebrated World Book Day in style.  Every single child, across the whole school abandoned school uniform in favour of a book character costume instead. 

On Monday 10th March, Chris Fisher the illustrator of The Wrong Pong and The Snow Dragon came to Heronswood Primary School to work with all the children. 

A KIDDERMINSTER zoologist will be making his first television appearance as a guest on a new BBC4 series about bones.

On February 10th 2014, Y6 visited Culmington Manor for a fun filled week of adventurous activities. We arrived after lunch and had a few minutes to settle in to the dorms.  Everyone was excited deciding who was sleeping on the top and bottom bunks!

Mrs Mikolajczyk says "Year 3 and 4 have started their 'Settlers and Invaders' Topic this week.

PUPILS at a Kidderminster school are combining two of their favourite things – chocolate and Christmas – to put on a festive fair for parents and staff.

Mrs Lynch and Mrs Mikolajczyk have said: "Year 3 and 4 went on a trip to Cadbury World on Wednesday 6th November 2013 to find out more about chocolate to help us with our topic. We discovered more about the history of chocolate and how it is made and sold.

Our Year Six children spent a week at Plas Caerdeon Outdoor Education Centre in the Spring Term.

Year 5/6.  The Native American experience -  children had to take the temperature with thermometers and then get inside the shelter.
