On Monday 18th November a group of children from Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School, on Spennells in Kidderminster took part in a litter pick with the Pick Up Artists – a litter picking organisation based in Kidderminster and the surrounding areas.
Children from both the Eco Schools and the School Council joined volunteers and the local Police Community Support Officer to collect several bags of litter in just a few hours.
The children were told about the impact litter has on local communities and how some litter has been lying around for over 20 years! The children saw how it can blight the appearance of areas but also realised how dangerous litter can be for wildlife.
The children were very enthusiastic and happy to see that in such a short time a small area around their school looked so much better. One child said, ‘I think we should do this each week so we can protect our environment.”
Ms Fleming, the Eco School lead for Heronswood said, “Our children were actually shocked by the amount of rubbish lying around. They even found a crisp packet which was dated 1996. This just shows the long term damage we are causing to the environment.”
