On Monday 10th March, Chris Fisher the illustrator of The Wrong Pong and The Snow Dragon came to Heronswood Primary School to work with all the children.

During the day Chris held sessions with all of the classes and he talked to the children about how he collects inspiration for his drawings.  He also disclosed that he had famous connections with people like JK Rowling and Jacqueline Wilson.  He explained how he works with authors to produce the illustrations that we see in his remarkable and entertaining books.  We were also amazed to learn that sometimes he gives his drawings to authors and that they write the stories around the characters he has created.

After sharing some of his books, Chris then took the children’s ideas to create illustrations which were personalised for each year group. Children across the school, from Reception to Year 6, created characters and stories whilst Chris translated these into drawings for each phase to keep.

As part of this week’s English work the class teachers are using this stimulating experience as an exciting and inspirational start for the children’s writing in classes.

Mrs Pierpoint, Deputy Head Teacher said, “We are constantly looking for ways to inspire our children as writers.  As a school we use text mapping to support our children from initial ideas into full blown stories, recounts and reports.  The illustrator demonstrated to the children how he uses the same concept to inspire his own work.  This was a truly amazing opportunity for our children.”
