Following our very successful Earth Hour and popular Healthy Living day at Heronswood Primary School we developed A BIG AMBITION! EVERY CHILD THAT COULD, WALKED TO SCHOOL.

Current research shows that a generation ago, 70% of children walked to school – now it’s less than half that number!

Heronswood children wanted to reverse that decline. During the week. Children, parents and carers were energised and empowered- to make walking to school their natural choice. In order for this to happen, we needed the support of our fantastic parents and carers. So during the week 15-19th May, everyone tried to walk to school!

As the research suggests; the children who do some form of exercise, especially a walk before school, do better in class because they arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn. Children stated that they loved walking to school as they were able to chat to friends and family.

During morning peak traffic times, one in five cars on the road are taking children school, contributing to congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions.IR The ‘school run’ alone is responsible for generating two million tonnes of CO2 per year. Can you imagine what we achieved when we converted some of these rides to strides?

To celebrate participation in this fantastic week, children were invited to wear their own shoes to school. Children and adults wore some amazing shoes – fun and wacky. We had Sooty and Sweep, dragons and mice!

Well done to the 210 children from Preschool to Year 6 who received a certificate for walking to school every day during this week!
