Children from Heronswood Primary School were delighted to meet two very special visitors, who had travelled all the way from Kyelini, a rural part of Kenya, 30 miles from Nairobi.

The visitors, Benard and Winifred both teachers at Kyelini Primary School have been working with the Rivers C of E Multi Academy Trust for the last 5 years.  During this time the links have been strengthened and joint projects have been carried out on both sides of the world.  Some of the projects include building wells, building libraries and building mud huts to help enrich the lives of children both in Africa and in England.

The children at Heronswood wanted to entertain the visitors so they prepared and performed two traditional African songs in the whole school assembly followed by a guided tour of the school.  Our learning ambassadors proudly showed the visitors around explaining how we approach learning and how the children themselves help to steer and develop their own curriculum.  Bernard and Winifred told the children at Heronswood that all of their children go to school without shoes on and our children were amazed to learn that even four year old children in Kenya are allowed to walk themselves to school.

After touring our four brand new Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms, our special visitors also explained that they have up to 100 children in one class, compared to only 30 children here; this shocked our children but it terrified our teachers!

Mrs Pierpoint, Head of School said, “We really hope that in the near future some of our teachers from Heronswood will be able to do a visit to Kenya, to go and see the Kyelini Primary School and Bernard and Winifred in their own school settings.”

To see more of Heronswood Primary School, please come along to one of the open days which are being held on Wednesday 14th October 1pm-7pm or Saturday 17th October 10am-2pm.  Telephone the school office for more information, 01562 69750.
