English Information

We emphasise the importance of reading in Year One and aim to nurture a love of reading by exposing the children to a wide range of quality texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries and each week we award one child as reader of the week.  It is a whole school expectation that children read at least five times per week; please also remember to sign diaries once children have read. We teach children the mechanics of reading through the use of daily phonics lessons which enable them to decode and read words using sounds. The phonics screening test takes place in the Summer term and identifies children’s phonic understanding. Guided reading sessions each day supports reading and analytical skills within small groups.

Maths Information

Maths teaching in Year One aims to increase pupils’ confidence and fluency with whole numbers up to 100 and create a solid understanding of place value through a variety of methods. Different interactions with number should enable children to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem solve using effective strategies. Year One are taught to count to and across 100, count in 2s, 5s and 10s and use addition and subtraction to interpret mathematical statements in a variety of situations.

Topic Information for the Term

You will find links to the topic web for each term in 'The Curriculum' subsection in 'About Us'. The topic web will allow you to see what your child is covering across the curriculum during this academic year.

PE and Kit Information

Our PE days are Mondays and Tuesdays.

Monday – Indoor PE

Tuesday – Forest School

It is really important that the children have a suitable PE kit in school on our PE days so that they can participate fully in the activities.

The PE kit is as follows:

Navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper and trainers.  (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer)

All items of the PE kit should be clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag with the child’s name on the outside.

Homework

Spellings are sent home on a weekly basis and the test will be on a Friday each week. In addition, the red homework books will be sent home each week with a phonics focus linked to the learning that week. The children will also need to learn to count in groups of 2, 5 and 10. Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult; to be signed off in their diaries which are checked daily.  It is really important that with all homework the children are encouraged to complete it independently, but then supported when necessary.

Unlocking Learning

All children have a Phonics Bug login and this resource can be used at home to encourage more reading.  Please support your child in using the following websites:
