Welcome to Year 4 HG

Hello and welcome to our Year 4 HG class page.   This page is aimed at sharing all the necessary information with our parents and carers.

Our class teacher is Miss Guest and our teaching assistant is Miss Trentham.  In addition, Miss Whelan teaches us on a Wednesday afternoon.

In our class the rules and expectations are built around the core values of our school.

English Information

Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries and each week we award one child as reader of the week. It is a whole school expectation that children read five times per week.

Maths Information

The principal focus of mathematics teaching in Year 4 is to ensure that children become increasingly fluent with whole numbers, fractions and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This should ensure that children develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately. Children should also develop their ability to solve a range of problems and develop mathematical reasoning. By the end of Year 4, pupils should have mastered all times tables up to 12x12.

Discrete Maths lessons are taught on a daily basis although Maths is linked to topic where possible. Children are encouraged to use and apply their Maths skills through real life situations.

PE and Kit Information

Our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please make sure that children have their kit in on these days. PE kits should be left at school to ensure that children are fully equipped and will be sent home half termly.

The PE kit is as follows:

Navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper and trainers.  (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer)

All items of the PE kit should be clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag with the child’s name on the outside.

Homework

Spellings from the Year 3/4 statutory spelling list will be tested every half term. In addition, the red homework books will be sent home each week with a piece of Maths and a piece of English homework relating to work covered in lessons. The children will also need to learn all of their times tables by heart to use in their maths work this year. Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult.  It is really important that with all homework the children are encouraged to complete it independently but then supported when necessary.

Topic Information for the Term

You will find links to the topic web for each term in 'The Curriculum' subsection in 'About Us'. The topic web will allow you to see what your child is covering across the curriculum during this academic year.
