Children at Heronswood Primary School experienced an exotic day, on Wednesday 12th March when they were visited by The Animal Man (theanimalman.co.uk).  This amazing and stimulating opportunity was enjoyed by all the children in Key Stage 1 and the Reception classes.

Even the teachers were enthralled by the animals and they kept popping in at break and lunch times! Head teacher, Mr Ascroft said, “There’s no better way to support children’s learning than by immersing them in an experience which brings their learning to life.”

During the day the children had the opportunity to interact with a variety of unusual animals; including a gecko lizard, a chameleon lizard, a bearded dragon lizard, a baby boa constrictor, a tarantula, a corn snake, an owl, a skunk and even a Brazilian Honey Bear!

Our children showed amazing bravery and many of them volunteered to hold the animals.  Each child had the chance to hold, stroke and ask questions about the animals which came from all over the world.  The children learnt so much from this experience which was totally relevant to their current topic work.  The Key Stage one teachers said, “The Animal Man was brilliant at answering all the questions and since the children spent time with the animals they have been really keen to get involved with creating their own fact files.”

All children thoroughly enjoyed their experience with The Animal Man and they were all very relieved when the Skunk decided that he liked them enough to not spray them!
