On Wednesday 20th July, Year Five and Six pupils at Heronswood delivered a brilliantly stunning performance of one of the most popular Disney animated musicals, The Lion King. Year Six actors presented the story of a lion cub's journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny.

Simba (played first by Max Speed, then by Marty Wuzik) begins life as an honoured prince, the son of the powerful King Mufasa (played by Robbie Boucher). The cub's happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle, Scar (played by Josh Jones), murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom.

In exile, the young lion befriends the comically bumbling pair of Pumbaa the warthog (played by Rosey Millward) and Timon the meerkat (played by Clayton Littleton), and all together they live a carefree jungle life.

But one day, Simba is discovered by Nala (played by Anna Watkins) and she convinces Simba that he should take his rightful place, as King on Pride Rock.

As Simba approaches adulthood, he is visited by the spirit of his father, who instructs him to defeat the nefarious Scar and reclaim his rightful throne. Borrowing elements from Hamlet, classical mythology, and African folk tales,

The audience were spell bound as they enjoyed this mythic coming-of-age tale with a combination of spectacular visuals, lively music and stunning costumes and makeup.  The performance was embraced by everyone in the audience, children and adults alike, as they enjoyed the amazing singing from Year Five with  songs  such as "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and  "The Circle of Life".

One of the Year 5 parents, Mrs Watson said, “WOW, WOW, WOW!
Congratulations to Y5 & Y6 on their end of year performance of The Lion King. It was truly amazing to watch. You were all fantastic and loving every minute on stage. You certainly got the audience laughing and crying. Well done to all the staff involved, in particular Mr Partridge for directing it.

Many thanks to Mr Brownlow, Head of King Charles, who kindly offered use of a professional stage and Derek for the professional lighting and music support at both performances.
