The Local Governing Body at Heronswood Primary School visited the children in their classrooms to see how writing is taught and how the consistent approach is having a positive impact on outcomes for children.

Four governors; including the Chair, Parent governors and Community governors conducted a learning walk from Pre-School to Year 6 to see how writing is being taught across the school. The governors spent time in each classroom observing the children learning and then talking to them about being writers rather than just being asked to write. The children proudly showed their writing and discussed the progress they had made during the year and how their writing targets helped them. The children were able to articulate their next steps and describe to the governors how they were going to make their improvements.

It was obvious to the governors that the children across Heronswood, whether aged 3 or aged 11, love writing and that the use of practical resources supports the head, hand and heart of a writer. The children were able to articulate their understanding of SWEETP2C and could talk about how they applied their Author and Editor skills to show deeper understanding.

Josh K, in Year 6 said to the governors, “I love writing! It doesn’t matter what I write about – I just love it.”

Phil Coldicott, one of the newest governors to join the governing body said, “I’m totally impressed with what I’ve seen today. I have had reception children showing me their joined up writing and Year 6 children explaining how they apply their grammatical understanding in their writing to gain authorial control of the reader.”

In addition, Lisa Gregg, Chair of the Governing Body said, “It was fantastic to see the children so enthusiastic and engaged in their writing. Mrs Kingston, the English lead – has a clear vision which is certainly demonstrating impact on writing across the school.”
