Your child will get a foundation in literacy through communication and language activities such as role play, listening exercises, guided reading, focused writing groups and show and tell.

They will also learn the alphabet, the phonic sounds and the 100 high frequency words.  The children will then be taught to blend their phonics which will then enable them to read words independently.

In addition, children in Reception year will begin to write; you can help them with this and practice handwriting at home. They’ll be shown how to hold a pencil, form cursive letters, write words and then write sentences. Basic grammar is taught at this point; including finger spaces, full stops, capital letters, question marks, exclamation marks and speech marks.
