Once your child has mastered the basics of phonics, a whole world of reading starts to open up to them!

They benefit hugely from books which gradually introduce new words and sentence structures, helping them to progress steadily and surely. That’s where levelled reading books come in.

It is very important that children are not pushed up through the colour bands too quickly because they can read all the words.   Once your child has mastered the skills of reading it is essential to work on their comprehension skills to enhance their deep understanding of the texts they read.

At Heronswood our reading scheme is based on Oxford Reading Tree but is also supplemented by Project X, Tree Tops and Bug Club.  All our books follow colour bands.  The following colour bands are the age related expectations for your child.  It is crucial for children to read on a daily basis with an adult at home to enable them to be confident and fluent.
