As a school we start to teach early phonics in Pre-School, helping children to discriminate between sounds.

During Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 our children move through the different phases of phonics until they are confident with all the sounds up to and including Phase 6.  Sometimes children in Key Stage 2 will need additional phonics to support them with their reading and writing skills.  At Heronswood we follow Letters and Sounds and support the teaching of phonics with Phonics Play, Bug Club, Ruth Miskin, Rapid Phonics and additional resources.

Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.  It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of four, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age six.
