At Heronswood we believe in providing children with a broad, balanced curriculum which both provides first hand experiences and builds on children’s prior knowledge. Through our creative curriculum we develop children’s abilities, interests and potential in order to prepare them for the next stage in their lives. We use a broad range of teaching strategies that take into account the ways in which children learn in order to foster engagement, motivation and creativity.

The curriculum at Heronswood Primary is underpinned by the National Curriculum (2014) and we enhance this further with carefully planned opportunities that make up the wider school curriculum.

As a school we start to teach early phonics in Pre-School, helping children to discriminate between sounds.

Once your child has mastered the basics of phonics, a whole world of reading starts to open up to them!

Below you will find the learning objectives that your child is aiming to achieve by the end of their year group.

Ask your child if they have been a good learner?

We help children to reflect on their learning by linking it to the following behaviours:

Your child will get a foundation in literacy through communication and language activities such as role play, listening exercises, guided reading, focused writing groups and show and tell.

Children in the Reception classes will begin to learn about numbers and how to work with them in basic calculations.

Throughout Heronswood British Values along with Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC) plays an important role in the development of our children becoming kind, caring and thoughtful citizens.

The following can help to provide support and guidance to parents and carers with children in EYFS (Pre-School and Reception)

Below you will find the learning objectives that your child is currently working on.
